Membership Types

When applying to join The Institute for Systems Engineering (IfSE), an individual may apply for one of the following membership types:

  • Student Member
  • Affiliate Member
  • Professional Member

It is possible to become a member of IfSE only, or a joint member of IfSE and INCOSE. Those wishing to undertake or maintain any level of certification or gain access to incose.org, should select joint membership. Please note that all Student Memberships of IfSE are joint with INCOSE.

IfSE Levels of Membership

Student Member

IfSE Student members must be enrolled in a higher or Further education course based upon a Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) subject or one which leads to the award of a master's or bachelor's degree, or to a Level 3 or higher vocational course.

Students enrolled on an eligible course at one of our UKAB member Universities are entitled to reduced cost Student Membership. This is accessed using a discount code provided by the membership team.

Affiliate Member

There are no qualifying criteria to become an Affiliate Member of IfSE other than signing the code of conduct.

Professional Member

Criteria Restrictions Proof Required

Individuals applying for IfSE Professional Membership, must include educational and experiential evidence with their membership application, such as uploading a CV document. Qualifying criteria include:

  • UK Honours degree in a subject which appears in the Engineering Council's accredited course database, with or without a "requires further learning" caveat
  • A qualification in another subject at Honours degree level, along with an evidence statement demonstrating at least two years' post-graduation experience which is relevant to Systems Engineering
  • Current professionally registered status with another UK Professional Engineering Institute and can provide evidence that they are currently practicing as a systems engineer
  • INCOSE ESEP, CSEP or ASEP qualification along with an evidence statement demonstrating at least two years' post-graduation experience which is relevant to Systems Engineering
  • Evidence of having passed the INCOSE SEP knowledge exam within the last 5 years along with an evidence statement demonstrating at least two years' post-graduation experience which is relevant to Systems Engineering
  • The Systems Engineering Degree Apprenticeship (SEDA, formerly SEMAP) master's qualification along with an evidence statement demonstrating at least two years' post-graduation experience which is relevant to Systems Engineering
  • Other level 7, or level 6, degree apprenticeships in STEM subjects where the courses are approved by IfATE along with an evidence statement demonstrating at least two years' post-graduation experience which is relevant to Systems Engineering
  • Level 5,4 or 3 apprenticeships in STEM subjects which are approved by IfATE along with an evidence statement demonstrating at least two years' post-graduation experience which is relevant to Systems Engineering.
  • Level 5, 4, or 3 higher education qualifications in STEM subject when combined with an evidence statement demonstrating at least three years' post-graduation experience (or the equivalent thereof) which is relevant to Systems Engineering

Transition to Registered Member is only permitted for those Professional Members who have been successful in applying for and obtaining a professional qualification (CEng, IEng, EngTech) through the Institute's defined processes.

Awarded to existing Professional Members or Registered Members, based upon a peer-reviewed nomination and assessment process with all recommendations ratified by the directors.

IfSE Honorary Fellow – not currently available

Criteria Restrictions Proof Required

Awarded to specific individuals who have made a significant contribution in the field of Systems Engineering and who would not be eligible to apply for Fellow status (most likely through lack of currency in the discipline). This is intended to be a rarely used class of membership and requires approval by the directors.
